Start Your Day in Boston Off Right!

Breakfast in Boston at Cafe Beatrice -orange pastry

To start our one-day Boston itinerary, we will begin with breakfast.  Maybe you have a hotel that provides one; in that case, skip this section.

If you are looking for delicious places for breakfast in Boston, I have a few recommendations.

Cafe Luna came highly recommended, but we got confused and ended up at Lil Luna.  This is a quick service option if you don’t want to sit down.  The food is amazing! I ended up having French toast with fruit.

We also tried Cafe Beatrice and really enjoyed the breakfast tacos.

After breakfast, it is time to explore the city!

First Stop - Freedom Trail

Freedom Trail Tour in Boston with tour guide

Morning: Walk the Freedom Trail + Visit Paul Revere’s House

Start your day early by walking Boston’s famous Freedom Trail — a red-brick path winding through 2.5 miles of historic sites.   I highly recommend taking a tour.   This experience was so fun for us!

Our tour guide was a Harvard student and shared so much insight and awesome historical facts.  I loved it! 100% recommend Booking a Tour

You can also get a GoCity Pass, which will allow you to do this, plus a lot of other fun Boston activities.

The tours begin at the Boston Common, the oldest public park in the U.S.

You will also get to see really cool places like the Old South Meeting House, Faneuil Hall, and Old North Church.

Boston Massacre

One part of the tour that I loved learning about was the Boston Massacre.  It was so interesting to imagine how this event took place.  You will love hearing both sides of the story!

The tour ends in the North End of Boston near Paul Revere’s House.

Visit Paul Reveres House

Paul Revere House along the Boston Trail

After the tour, we decided to visit Paul Revere’s House.  There is a minimal entrance fee. It is covered with the GoCity Pass , if you choose to do that.

It’s the oldest remaining structure in downtown Boston (1680) and offers a glimpse into the life of one of the Revolution’s most legendary figures.

I love historic sites. Paul Revere was not only a patriot but was a silversmith, engraver, and industrialist bell maker.  Some of his bells are still in use today throughout New England.

This site will only take you 20-30 minutes to visit.

North End Lunch and Snack

North End Italian Food

After you visit the historic sites, you will find yourself in the North End of Boston.  This is where you will want to eat!

There are some amazing Italian restaurants.  In fact, they call this area Little Italy.  This area had a huge number of immigrants from Italy in the 19th and 20th centuries.

This is where you will find some amazing Italian food and bakeries.

Some of these restaurants are cash only.  Luckily, there are ATM nearby.

We decided to go to Carmelina’s.  It was so delicious. I have only tasted this same quality of freshness of noodles in Italy.  It was really good.  I highly recommend going!

Bakeries in the North End

Cannoli in North End Boston

There are two major bakeries. Both will have extremely long lines! Mike’s Bakery and Modern Pastry are the most popular.

There will be long lines.  It took us about 30 minutes to get through the line at Modern Pastry.

We know a lot of people who live in Boston, and they all told us Modern Pastry was the place to go.  We did not try Mike’s.

Boston Public Market

Farmers Market in Boston

The Boston Public Market is a fun place to visit. It is only a short 6-minute walk from the North End. This is an area to eat, shop, walk around, and have a great time.

If you want some of the best seafood, this is where you will want to head.  Red Best Fish Market is one of the top recommendations for getting a lobster roll that we received.

Next Stop - USS Constitution or Tea Party Musuem

USS Constitution Musuem in Boston

You probably are not going to have time to do both the USS Constitution and the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum in only one day in Boston.

We decided to go with the USS Constitution, and it did not disappoint!

Choice One – Midday: USS Constitution & Charlestown

Navy Yard From the North End, follow the trail across the bridge to Charlestown, where the USS Constitution, aka “Old Ironsides,” awaits. We decided to take an Uber to save time.

This is the oldest commissioned warship afloat in the world — and still crewed by U.S. Navy sailors.

One of the things I learned and loved was that the USS Constitution was used in the War of 1812.  Its construction was so solid (Oak from Georgia) that even cannons would just bounce right off the side of the ship.

We loved exploring the museum, climbing aboard the ship, and taking in the harbor views. It’s a moving tribute to America’s maritime strength and early resilience.

We really liked touring the boat and the museum. The museum is awesome for kids. There are so many hands-on activities.

You can book a tour that includes the Freedom Trail, USS Constitution, and Bunker Hill.

USS Constitution Old Ironsides in Boston

Choose Two

The Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum is another great option. I really wanted to go to the Boston Tea Party Ships.  We just didn’t have enough time to do it all.

The Boston Tea Party happened on December 17, 1773.  Our tour guide on the Freedom Trail told us that the amount of tea that was thrown into the harbor would be valued at 1.7 million in today’s money!

One cool thing about this area is that you can engage with colonial actors and learn about the different people involved in this event.

Both of these are awesome options for a day in Boston.

Dinner in Boston

Wrap up your one-day in Boston itinerary with dinner at one of Boston’s amazing restaurants.

We decided on The Puritan and Company.  It was very good.  It offered a variety of menu items.

Wrapping Up Your Day

A lot of the major historical sites close early.  But there are still quite a few options of things to do in Boston at night.

SeaPort District

The Seaport District is a great place to start.  You can watch the sunset over the harbor and go for a lovely walk. Then jump on a night cruise on the Boston Harbor.

Fenway Park

If you are a baseball fan, you can take a tour of the Historic Fenway Park, or if you are lucky and the Red Sox are playing, you can go to a game.

Boston Ghost Tours

If you want to book a ghost tour, there are lots of options.  Being one of the oldest cities in America, there are lots of haunts around town.

Best Family Friendly Options

One of my favorite places for kids near the Boston area is the Plimoth Patuxet Plantation.  It is about an hour outside of the city.

The Plimoth Plantation is a living history museum.  You can even see a reproduction of the Mayflower.  It is a fun, interactive place for kids to learn about the early colonists.

For a Family Boston Itinerary, I would get up early and drive to Plimoth Patuxet Plantation.  Then go to either the Boston Tea Party Ships or the USS Constitution Museum.

When my kids were little, we did this, and it was so cool!  They loved every minute.

The drive back to Boston will give your kids time to take a nap, so they will be ready to go for the next adventure!
