We recently did an epic Canada family vacation near Toronto! I was surprised at how little I knew about Canada. I was very interested in knowing more about the hidden gems and where else we could plan a family trip to Canada.
I am excited to share with you this collaboration post on all of the amazing places to visit in Canada with family.
In this post, we will share the best Canadian family vacation spots from the East Coast to the West Coast. We will list some fun family activities as well as accommodations nearby.

1. Charlottetown PEI

Halifax is an ideal destination for a family getaway in Canada. With its compact size, the city is easily navigable on foot, even for little explorers.
While many visitors only allocate a day to Halifax, the city offers so many more attractions that you could easily spend a week here. This is great for families with children, who prefer a more relaxed pace.

If you’re planning a summer family vacation in Canada, consider spending time at the longest freshwater beach in the world, Wasaga Beach.
Located in Ontario, about two hours northwest of Toronto, this beach town explodes in the summer months as it welcomes over 2 million visitors each year.

My family loves staying in really nice hotels! Blue Mountain Resort north of Toronto is one of the best family vacation spots in Canada.
The Westin Vacation Resort is located at the base of Blue Mountain. This resort has an amazing pool and fantastic amenities. Passes to Blue Mountain Resort are included with your stay during certain times of the year.

During the summer months, Blue Mountain has fun activities like a mountain coaster, mini golf, ropes courses, and zip lines. There is also a gondola to the top of the mountain where you can hike around.
We loved walking around the village at the base of Blue Mountain. There are nice restaurants and fun shops. The kids loved getting beaver tails and poutine!

Algonquin Park is Canada and Ontario’s first ever provincial park. Established in 1893, that makes it nearly as old as Banff!
Just a few hours drive from both Toronto and Ottawa, Algonquin Park makes for a fantastic outdoor family vacation.
There are over 10 tent and RV campgrounds to choose from. Most of them are connected to a lake, with beautiful beaches to swim and canoe or kayak from.
If you don’t have a boat, there are rentals available in several locations across the park, and they’ll deliver your canoe right to your campsite for free!
Dogs are welcome at Algonquin so you don’t have to leave your family pup behind for this vacation! There are several dog beaches and off-leash areas to ensure they have a great time.
Things to Do at Algonquin Park
Great for kids are the Discovery Programs, which offer activities and experiences with games, stories, and animals. There are events every weekend, especially during the summer.

A great family vacation in Canada is the lesser-known region of Alberta known as Kananaskis, located just 1 hour from Calgary and 1 hour from the more-popular Banff National Park.
Kananaskis is a perfect place for families because it’s quieter than the likes of Banff and Jasper, easy to get to, more budget-friendly and has lots of fun things to do for families.

Some of the best things to do in Kananaskis include visiting the home of the 1988 Winter Olympics, Nakiska Ski Resort, where all of the skiing events were held so you can try some for yourself or learn a bit about the games.
Kananaskis is part of the Rocky Mountains so there are some great opportunities for hiking including lots of children-friendly hikes such as seeing the Troll Falls, visiting the natural hot springs on Mist Mountain and walking along the Blackshale Suspension Bridge.
Lots of Canadian family vacations include the chance to see wildlife and Kananaskis has the Smith Dorrien road which is always a place where locals and tourists spot Black Bears and Grizzly Bears so be sure to keep your eyes peeled and be Bear-Safe while traveling through the area.

14. Canada Summer Vacation to British Colombia Lakes
Summers in British Columbia are beautiful! Once the weather is nice and sunny, the only thing on our minds is getting outside in the fresh air at a nearby lake. There are many lakes near Vancouver but a lot of them are extremely crowded
Rolley Lake
Rolley Lake, located near Mission, BC is a small charming pool of water, day rest area, campgrounds, and few fun family-friendly, accessible hiking trails + a harder trail to Rolley Falls.
The Rolley Lake beach is not too large, but hey, there are not too many people either! There is a sandy part and there is a grassy picnic area.

The absolute best thing about Rolley Lake is that there are no motorized and powerboats allowed!!! This is such a relief especially when you are looking to get some downtime with small kids.
There are plenty of fishing boats and kayaks in the water – actually we’d rate this place the perfect spot to teach your children kayaking.

15. Squamish British Columbia Canada
Known as the adventure capital of Canada, there are so many great things to do in Squamish for families that love the outdoors.
This small town is located on the Sea to Sky Highway, roughly halfway between Vancouver and Whistler.
Things to Do in Squamish
If you want to take the easy route to incredible views, ride the Sea to Sky Gondola up into the mountains. You can look down to the waters of Howe Sound and up to the snow capped mountains from their sunny patio. Or go for a walk on their easy trails to a spectacular viewing platform.
But if you’re ready to sweat, hit the trails. The most popular hike in town is the grueling trek to the top of the Stawamus Chief, a huge granite outcropping.
Rock climbers scale the sheer western side, but you can follow steep trails up the back to get a great view. In addition to hiking and rock climbing, Squamish is also known for great mountain biking, with a huge network of trails, and kite surfing in the windy waters of Howe Sound.
After your adventure, explore downtown Squamish along Cleveland and 2nd Avenues. There are lots of cute shops like Billie’s House, which has cute plants and homegoods.
If you’re hungry, head to Taka Ramen for the freshest sushi and richest ramen around.

Regardless of what time of year you visit, Whistler is an excellent destination for a Canada family vacation. Located in beautiful British Columbia, Whistler is conveniently located just an hour and a half along the Sea to Sky Highway, a stunning scenic drive along the Howe Sound.
If you visit in the wintertime, Whistler is an excellent destination for snow sports—in fact, the 2010 Winter Olympics were held here. Whistler Blackcomb, the main ski resort here, is excellent for beginners with a ski school and a whopping 70 green runs to choose from.

Alternatively, in the warmer months, Whistler turns into an outdoors lovers’ paradise.
There’s several family-friendly trails to explore within Whistler, like the quirky Whistler Train Wreck hike, which takes you to a series of gnarled train cars that are scattered throughout the woods from an accident in 1956, or even more options just a short distance away.
For example, less than an hour away, you can explore the Mamquam Falls trail, which leads through a lush rainforest to a turquoise waterfall.
Alternatively, take a kayaking or stand-up paddleboard tour to get out on any of Whistler’s beautiful alpine lakes, where you can take in the spectacular mountainscapes around you and keep your eyes peeled for the abundant wildlife that calls this area home.
For a less demanding way to enjoy Whistler’s epic scenery, take the Peak 2 Peak gondola, which offers panoramic views of Whistler Village and the surrounding mountain peaks, glaciers, and pine tree forests. If you’re feeling particularly brave, book a ride on the glass-bottomed gondola!

Kelowna, BC, located in the Okanagan Valley, is a great place for a family vacation in Canada as it offers many activities to suit all members of the family.

Victoria BC is hands down one of the best family vacations in Canada. The city is very walkable, overall clean and safe, has a great family-friendly atmosphere, and there’s a wide variety of fun and affordable activities.

In fact, some of the best activities in Victoria are free! Explore Fan Tan Alley in Victoria’s Chinatown, the narrowest commercial street in North America. Or visit the Fisherman’s Wharf and watch the marine wildlife nearby.
Then take a tour of the Parliament Building; the history is interesting and the building is beautiful. And an extra tip, be sure to catch a stunning view of the Parliament Building lit up at night!

How to Get to Tofino
You can fly to Tofino (YAZ) from Vancouver on daily non-stop flights on Pacific Coastal Airlines or into Tofino Harbour on Harbour Air.
If you are driving from Vancouver you will need to take a ferry to Vancouver Island and then drive 3 hours to Tofino. The drive itself is fantastic with many places to stop along the way.
Whichever way you decide to get there, Tofino should be on everyone’s bucket list. You will not be disappointed!
