Why Visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber?
Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Germany and one of the most popular stops along the Romantic Road.
The town is famous for:
- medieval architecture
- colorful buildings
- city walls and towers
- Christmas shops
- fairytale streets
- incredible photography spots
Honestly, one of the best things to do here is simply walk around and soak in the atmosphere. You can book a audio walking tour or you can book a private tour with a local guide. Almost every corner of Rothenburg looks like a postcard.
If you love charming European towns, this destination is going to be one of your favorite stops in Germany.
1. Visit the Famous Plönlein
If you have ever seen photos of Rothenburg ob der Tauber online, chances are you have already seen Plönlein.
Plönlein is easily the most famous photo spot in town. The little yellow half-timbered building sitting between the two towers honestly looks like something straight out of Disney.
This is one of the top things to do in Rothenburg ob der Tauber and definitely a must-see.
Pro Tip: Go early in the morning if you want pictures without crowds.
2. Walk the Medieval City Walls
One of the coolest experiences in Rothenburg is walking along the medieval city walls.
The walls wrap around much of the old town and give you incredible views of the rooftops, gardens, and streets below. Some sections are covered while others are open-air.
Kids usually love this activity because it feels like exploring a real medieval castle town.
3. Explore Market Square
The center of town is the beautiful market square.
Marktplatz Rothenburg ob der Tauber is surrounded by colorful historic buildings, restaurants, cafes, and shops. It is one of the best places to sit, relax, and enjoy the atmosphere.
This area is also home to the historic Town Hall.
4. Climb the Town Hall Tower
Want the best view in Rothenburg ob der Tauber?
Climb the Town Hall Tower!
The staircase gets narrow near the top, but the panoramic views over the red rooftops are absolutely worth it. This was one of our favorite things we did while visiting Rothenburg.
If you love photography, do not skip this stop.
5. Take the Famous Night Watchman Tour
The Night Watchman Tour is one of the most popular activities in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
During this evening walking tour, a guide dressed as the town’s historical night watchman walks visitors through the streets while sharing stories about medieval life, crime, and local history.
It is entertaining, family-friendly, and honestly one of the best ways to learn about the town.
6. Visit the Christmas Village
If you love Christmas, you are going to LOVE this stop.
Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Village is a giant year-round Christmas store filled with ornaments, decorations, nutcrackers, and holiday displays.
Even if you visit during summer, it still feels magical inside.
This is one of the most unique things to do in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
7. Visit St. Jakob’s Church
St. Jakob’s Church is one of the most important churches in the town and is known for its beautiful architecture and famous Holy Blood altarpiece.
The church dates back to the 1300s and is worth visiting even if you are only spending one day in Rothenburg.
8. Try a Schneeball Pastry
You cannot visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber without trying a Schneeball pastry.
This traditional German pastry is made from strips of fried dough shaped into a ball and covered in toppings like powdered sugar, chocolate, cinnamon, or nuts.
You will find bakeries selling them all over town.
We tried a few flavors. It taste good kind of like the flour lattice you put on top of a pie. I was super hungry so it totally hit the spot.
9. Wander the Cobblestone Streets
Honestly, one of the best things to do in Rothenburg ob der Tauber is simply explore.
Every street feels magical. You will find:
- flower boxes
- colorful buildings
- hidden alleys
- charming shops
- beautiful doorways
- cute cafes
This is one of the most photogenic towns we have visited in Europe.
10. Visit the Medieval Crime Museum
Looking for something unique?
The Medieval Crime Museum explores medieval laws, punishments, and justice systems. It is definitely one of the more unusual museums in Germany but surprisingly interesting.
Older kids and teenagers especially tend to enjoy this stop.
Honestly, it must have impacted me more than I thought it would. Inside the musuem are all forms of torture used during the middle ages. I seriously had nightmares the next night! We also went into the dungeons.
All of these places have an additional fee to enter but it wasn’t too much!

How Many Days Do You Need in Rothenburg ob der Tauber?
Many people visit as a day trip, but honestly, we recommend staying at least one night if possible.
The town becomes much quieter in the early morning and evening after day-trippers leave. That is when Rothenburg feels the most magical.
One to two days is usually the perfect amount of time.
The best place to stay is inside the old town walls.
Staying inside the medieval center allows you to:

There are lots of charming guesthouses and family-run hotels throughout the old town.
We stayed at Hotel Reichskuchenmeister right in the city. We used booking.com to book it. We wanted to have a true German hotel experience. This was perfect! We loved the breakfast and the accomodations were great.
The beds are very firm but we found that at every hotel in Bavaria!
